I am Natalie B. Wong (黄俐珍)
I am a director, performance maker and autodidact production and stage manager of Singapore-Chinese heritage, based in London.
I am interested in multi-disciplinary collaborations and I draw from an eclectic mix of styles to create performance.
Recent directing credits: Children of God by Jimin Suh (New Stories ‘20: Digital festival of new BESEA writings), The Tree of Objects (CAN Fest ‘20) and Chapters of a Floating Life by Clarence Coo – Yellow Earth: Typhoon ‘19.
In 2013 I became the first assistant director in residence at Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT). Here, I was mentored by directors: the late Braham Murray OBE., Bruce Guthrie, Scott Graham (Frantic Assembly) ,Kate Golledge and Samantha Scott-Blackhall. I worked on children’s theatre, new writings, musicals, and Shakespeare.
I have a strong passionate for working with young people particularly the disadvantaged, marginalised and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) communities.
My experience spans performing in outreach touring productions, directing theatre for children by children, directing children's theatre and teaching theatre to the young, 3-18yrs.
I have led inclusive theatre programmes for schools and communities in Singapore for young people across SEND,
at-risk, underprivileged and mainstream youths. From 2009 - 2013, I ran the theatre programme for The Little Arts Academy (funded by The Business Times Budding Artist Fund, Singapore).
In 2018, I co-founded Orang Collectif – a cross-disciplinary, multicultural collective and platform that tells critical and engaging stories through inquiry and devising. It also aims to support its peers through sharing networks, promoting each other's work & creating together.
The Orang Collectif and Joly Licks co-produced indie live art events The Giving (Sept 2020, streamed live on Zoom, in a Victorian house in west London).
We are working on creating workshops for our children's show, The Tree of Objects.
As production and stage manager, I often work with Split Britches, Chinese Arts Now, Steakhouse Live, New Earth Theatre and
Seke Chimutengwende.
I am currently working on developing The Tree of Objects and a solo performance for my drag character, Pipi [皮皮].
